History of The Old Course
From the Yamato Colony’s pineapple fields to the PGA TOUR Champions.
Before the Broken Sound Club
The Yamato Colony
Yamato Road was named after the Yamato Colony, a group of farmers from Japan who cultivated the land as a pineapple farm before the golf course was built. The only member of the colony who stayed in the area was George Morikami, who farmed in neighboring Delray Beach until the 1970s, when he donated his farmland to Palm Beach County to preserve it as a park and honor the memory of the Yamato Colony.
The colony is remembered today in Yamato Road, a major street in Boca Raton, in Morikami Park, and in the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Delray Beach is a sister city of Miyazu, in honor of George Morikami and the Yamato Colony.
A unique and challenging course
A “must play” in Boca Raton
The Old Course at Broken Sound Club is a private 18-hole golf course that opened in 1978. It measures 7,200 yards from the longest tees and has seven sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are TifEagle and the fairways Champion Bermuda grass.
The Old Course is one of the few stand-alone golf courses in the area: it doesn’t wind through housing, though it is a hidden gem surrounded by a business park. Host to the James Hardie™ Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational on the PGA TOUR Champions, it has many challenging holes, tricky fast greens, and plenty of water to contend with. José María Olazábal, Nick Price, and Retief Goosen all made their PGA TOUR Champions debuts here.
Beautifully landscaped with abundant wildlife, friendly and attentive staff, an upscale dining room, and locker rooms, it is a “must play” in Boca Raton. The course underwent a complete renovation by Rees Jones, unveiled in 2023.
